Peabody Energy initiated the first phase of its plan to resume mining activity in its North Goonyella coal mine in Queensland. Peabody on Wednesday said it started re-entry of Zone 1 of the mine.
The company shut the mine after it caught fire on September 2018. Zone 1 comprises 25% of the area to be re-entered. Peabody expects the zone as the least-affected from the fire. It will assess the underground conditions and make repairs in Zone 1 before moving into Zone 2.
