Borealis Group AG and Bionerga announced the commissioning of their joint-project Biostoom, a new waste-to-energy plant in Beringen, Belgium.
The new facility enables Borealis to source 50% of its total electricity consumption from renewable sources in its major business areas by 2030. The company’s natural gas consumption could be half-replaced by Biostoom’s supplying steam and electricity recovered from the processing of non-recyclable waste collected from nearby communities.
The first electricity delivery proceeded in August, and the first steam was delivered in October from the non-hazardous, non-recyclable waste collected from local households in nearby Limburg.
In the Beringen facility, Borealis has been lowering its direct and indirect carbon dioxide emissions. With Biostoom, the facility will be able to get 100% electricity supplied from 47% renewable sources and the intake of natural gas will be reduced by around 40%.
