AlwaysFree: Borealis Commissioned Naphtha-Storage Cavern in Finland

Author: SSESSMENTS

Borealis Group AG announced that the commission of its new naphtha cavern in Porvoo, Finland has now been safely done.

The facility is able to store naphtha in a more flexible, cost-efficient, and secure way. It also enables the storage of renewable naphtha including certified renewable polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE), along with renewable base chemicals, ethylene, propylene, and phenol.

The construction of the 80,000-m3 facility, 90 meters underground, started last year with a budget of around EUR25 million (USD29.6 million). It was finished ahead of schedule and significantly under budget.

Martijn van Koten, Borealis Executive Vice President Base Chemicals and Operations commented, “The innovative cavern in Porvoo improves our commercial flexibility and will make a valuable contribution to the achievement of our sustainability goals and the circularity of our products.”
