BP plc with partners Republic Services Inc. and Aria Energy announced the startup of a landfill-gas-to-renewable-natural-gas (RNG) project at South Shelby Landfill near Memphis, Tennessee.
Republic Services manages the landfill while Aria operates the project, processing and purifying biogas from the landfill into RNG. Under the startup, BP will transport the RNG into the interstate natural gas pipeline grid and market it.
On a daily basis, the South Shelby RNG facility is able to produce nearly 33,250 gallons of gasoline. It processes the landfill gas into low-carbon RNG, which is an upgraded, methane-rich product that can be used to fuel natural gas vehicle fleets.
The consumption of the low-carbon fuel results in roughly 50% lower greenhouse gas emissions than equivalent gasoline or diesel-fueled vehicles.
