British energy giant BP on July 27 said it had signed an agreement to collaborate with Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping to develop low carbon solutions and new alternative fuels for the shipping industry. Under the deal, BP experts will work on relevant research and development projects in the Center’s portfolio. They will also participate in developing methods and optimising pathways for safe and sustainable marine fuel.
BP’s executive vice president William Lin said the partnership is in line with the company’s vision to decarbonise carbon-intensive sectors such as shipping. Meanwhile, the Center CEO Bo Cerup-Simonsen said it shared the same high ambitions with BP to speed up the development of future net-zero solutions for the maritime industry. The shipping sector has been reliant on fossil fuels and needs complex policies and advanced technologies to shift to carbon neutrality.
