- Bloomberg reported on early-stage talks in late November
- The possible combination may have triggered antitrust concerns
According to Bloomberg article published on January 3, 2023, Brenntag SE is no longer proceeding with discussions to potentially acquire US rival Univar Solutions Inc..
Following a Bloomberg report in late November, Brenntag acknowledged that it was in preliminary discussions for the acquisition to cement its place as the world’s biggest chemical distributor with more than $30 billion in sales. While Brenntag is a serial acquirer of smaller assets, a Univar takeover would have marked its largest purchase by far. Brenntag said in a statement on Monday that talks had ended.
But while the combination could have boosted growth and cut costs, it could have also faced tough antitrust reviews as national governments more closely scrutinize sector tie-ups.
The German company is the global market leader in chemical and ingredients distribution, with over 17,000 employees in 78 countries, according to its website. Downers Grove, Illinois-based Univar boasts one of the industry’s largest private transportation fleets as well as a sales force and logistics team that helps connect chemical makers and buyers across sectors.
