On Wednesday, the CEO of Europe’s biggest utility Enel, Francesco Starace, joined the call to stop new fossil fuel projects while also advises to progressively deploy technology to limit the growth of greenhouse gas (GHG).
“We have to agree that we have to stop the extraction of additional fossil fuels around the planet,” he said.
Starace also opined that in the upcoming decade, the industry needs to progressively work on technologies that are not yet mature, such as green hydrogen and ways of extracting carbon from the atmosphere.
The energy shift would raise employment and economic growth, but millions of people needed to be retrained and re-skilled in the new industries, or, Starace said, the transition will take a longer time.
