Norwegian oil company Equinor has decided to stay in the US oil lobby group, the American Petroleum Institute. Previously, Equinor found “misalignments” between its climate policy and that of API. The company even ended membership in the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA) due to disagreement over climate policy.
However, Equinor said it would remain a member of API after the lobby group pledged to endorse the Paris Climate Accord to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius. Equinor said in a March report that it would engage with API and partner with other API members on policies related to climate and sustainability issues. Equinor also disclosed for the first time its membership fees, saying its contribution to API stands between $1 million and $3.5 million, similar to its contribution to the Norwegian Oil and Gas Association.
