On Thursday, the Vietnamese government said that ExxonMobil Corp. is assessing investments in new projects to establish liquified natural gas (LNG)-to-power plants in the country.
One possible project is the 4,000 MW LNG-to-power plant in Haiphong, which could start generating power sometime between 2025 and 2030. Another project would be in Long An province, a 3,000 MW LNG power plant in the Mekong Delta.
The plants probably will use LNG imported from the US or other countries, as a part of an effort to help balance trade between Vietnam and the US, said the statement.
On a related note, Exxon has long been involved in the development of the Blue Whale gas field in the country, but there is not a seen progress in recent years.
