Bart Cahir, the Senior VP of ExxonMobil’s upstream oil & gas business said that for several years, the company had urged US regulators to adopt better methane emissions regulations across the natural gas value chain. The company also expressed its disfavour to the Trump Administration’s decision to rescind Environmental Protection Agency rules on methane emissions from new oil and gas facilities.
According to Cahir, Exxon had managed to voluntarily reduce methane emissions in its operations through phasing out older equipment, improving leak detection using Big Data and aircraft. It also works with the governments of New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas, and other states to formulate reasonable methane regulations for new and existing operations.
ExxonMobil also makes progress in cutting emissions of other greenhouse gasses, including from flaring activities. Exxon successfully reduces flaring intensity from its unconventional operations in Texas and New Mexico to approximately 1% from 4.7%.
