Service operator the Ferrovial Servicios group, along with Waga Energy, will produce biomethane at Spain’s Can Mata landfill.
Waga Energy will recover landfill gas in the form of biomethane using the Wagabox purification technology. The Wagabox unit at the site will be commissioned in 2022 and will be financed by the first-ever long-term power purchase agreement for biomethane in Europe.
The project will avoid the emission of 17,000 tons of CO2 per year by substituting renewable gas for natural gas. It will treat up to 2,200 m3/h of landfill gas and inject 70 GWh/year of biomethane, supplying it to the gas network of the Spanish operator Nedgia.
Waga will purchase a part of the landfill gas from the Can Mata site from Ferrovial Servicios, finance the construction and operation of the unit, along with managing relations with the gas network operator and the sale of the biomethane.
The project will avoid the emission of 17,000 tpa of CO2 by substituting renewable gas for natural gas.
