According to a draft of the reform of Germany’s climate protection law, the energy sector would further be weighed down.
The new climate law is scheduled to be passed by the cabinet next Wednesday. It stipulates the country to slash greenhouse gases by 65% from the 1990 levels by 2030. The previous target was for a decline of at least 55%.
The draft law requires the energy sector to slash carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by roughly a third more than the previous plan. Industry must cut its emissions by an additional 15% while the transport sector by another 10%.
These changes come after Germany’s constitutional court order last week to tighten the legislation, to establish measures for the government to cut carbon emissions down close to zero by 2050.
