The German government is discussing a draft of plans to impose tighter controls to ensure it achieves targets to expand renewable energy capacity. The latest draft of the legislation includes annual quotas for biomass, solar, and offshore and onshore wind. According to the draft, which is still subject to change, those quotas will be regularly checked in each of 16 German federal states.
German is Europe’s largest economy and has an installed renewable power generation capacity of 118GW, the largest in the continent. Economy Minister Peter Altmaier said the new plan includes a target to generate 65% of electricity from renewables by 2030 and 80% by 2050. It also aims at making all of the power generated and consumed domestically to be climate neutral.
The government will also review the expansion targets every two years to make sure the country is able to reach its goals. The newest draft also sets higher targets for the expansion of biogas stations. The draft said that onshore wind capacity needs to be increased by an average of 4 GW a year over the next few years.
