On Thursday, Greenpeace blocked a tanker from delivering crude oil from Norway to Sweden in a protest.
Greenpeace’s flagship Rainbow Warrior blocked the Grena Knutsen tanker, carrying crude from Norway’s Gullfaks oilfield to Sweden’s Lysekil refinery in a protest against plans to expand the refinery. Greenpeace dropped anchor in a fjord near the installation owned by Sweden’s largest refiner Preem, the owner of Lysekil.
Greenpeace member Gustav Martner stated, “We will not let any crude oil to the refinery until Preem stops its plans to expand.”
Meanwhile, a Preem spokesman said that the police were negotiating with the Greenpeace crew.
According to Greenpeace, the Lysekil expansion would drive a jump in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 1 million tonnes/year, making it Swedish’s biggest source of CO2 emission. Additionally last week, Swedish climate activists Greta Thunberg said that the expansion could drive the country to fail in meeting its commitments to the Paris Agreement.
Meanwhile, Preem has said that it would decrease the emission in the future by utilizing carbon capture and storage (CCS) and producing more biofuels.
