AlwaysFree: Hydrogen, Ammonia May Provide Power Security in Energy Transition

Author: SSESSMENTS

On Wednesday, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol said that the utilization of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia in fossil fuel power plants can provide power security in the energy transition to greener power.

He elaborated that co-firing hydrogen and ammonia from low-carbon sources would decrease emissions from the existing fossil fuel plants, providing more flexibility in the energy transition.

This alternative option could be helpful for countries with young thermal fleets and limited access to other low-carbon resources, such as countries in East and Southeast Asia.

Still, Birol wished that production and transport costs for the commodities must further decrease. Also, to create supply chains, timely investments would be crucial.
