LPG consumption in India continued to increase in June, preliminary oil ministry data showed. According to the data, LPG demand reached 2.076 million tons last month, 16% above last year’s level. Despite the year-on-year increase, demand in June was below 2.314 million tons recorded in May amid the country’s nationwide lockdown which boosted demand for cooking gas.
LPG demand in India is expected to hold firm until September after the government decided to extend its free LPG scheme to poor households by three months. Many beneficiaries of the subsidy have failed to take advantage of the scheme as they used the deposited money to purchase other essential items such as foods.
The prices of non-subsidised LPG in India were largely unchanged from June to July. A non-subsidised 14.2-kg LPG cylinder costs INR594 ($7.90) in Delhi in July compared to INR593 in June, state-refiner IOCL said. This is compared to steep increases in diesel and gasoline prices which led to protests.
