India's petroleum and natural gas minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday said that the LPG supply from Saudi Arabia would arrive in the world's second-largest importer of the fuel in the coming days to fulfill domestic needs. The statement came after the minister called Saudi energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, who promised the supply.
Saudi Arabia is a key supplier of oil and other products to India, which is currently under a nationwide lockdown to curb the coronavirus spread. India imported 14.538 million tons of LPG in 2019, 19.22% higher than its imports in 2018. Local LPG demand reached 26.944 million tons, increasing by 7.93% over the same period.
At the same time, domestic LPG production grew at a slower pace of 0.28% to 12.77 million tons in 2019. Last year, India also imported LPG from the US for the first time after attacks on Saudi Arabia's critical oil infrastructures in mid-September.
