India plans to spur the pace of its doubling oil refining capacity despite the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the country.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that instead of the previous target of ten years, the doubling of refining capacity would occur in five years, a much more aggressive timeline. He said that at the moment, work is being done in this regard.
Previously, Modi said that India's oil refining capacity could jump to 450-500 million tonnes in ten years from the current level of about 250 million tonnes.
Other than that, the country aims to increase the share of natural gas in its energy-consumption mix by up to four times from the current level of 6%. Modi added that India also accelerates the targets of increasing renewable energy capacity, to 175 GW by 2022, and 450 GW by 2030.
At the end of 2018, India had a renewable energy capacity of about 75 GW.
