Japan will ask about the early exclusion of trade tariff for the automotive industry, including auto parts, in the post-Brexit trade agreement negotiations with Britain. After leaning the trade policy to the European Union for decades, Britain now has a wider opportunity to negotiate its own free-trade deals with countries around the world.
Japan hopes to urge Britain on bringing free-trade period for Japan cars and parts, as well as adopting digital trade rules. The video conference talks are scheduled on Tuesday, June 10, between British trade minister Liz Truss and Japan foreign minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
Japan is listed as a fourth-biggest non-EU trading partner in 2019 for Britain, and last year trade totalled on 31.4 billion pounds ($39.91 billion). As Britain has hopes to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the country sees that trade negotiations towards Japan are one of the ways to achieve the position.
