- Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the State of Western Australia (WA State)to strengthen the cooperation in the field of energy resources including oil, gas, hydrogen and ammonia, CCS and CCUS in general, on December 7, 2022.
- JOGMEC will further strengthen the relationship with the WA State for the stable supply of energy to Japan through the activities stipulated in the MOU.
According to the company’s website news release on December 8, 2022, JOGMEC has signed a MOU with the WA State and agreed to promote a stable supply of natural resources to Japan and promote investment in the WA State from Japan. Under the MOU, JOGMEC will actively not only exchange information and views on oil, gas, hydrogen, ammonia, methanation, carbon capture and storage(CCS), and carbon dioxide capture, utilization and storage(CCUS)but also seek opportunities for Japanese business to work with the WA State in the future.
In the WA State, several Japanese companies are conducting feasibility studies on establishing a clean fuel ammonia supply chain from Australia to Japan, and high potential geological structures for CO2 storage are expected in the state. JOGMEC intends to provide information on the resource policy from the WA State and structure new projects in the WA State, where clean fuel and CCS/CCUS potential are expected, based on this MOU. In addition, the certification scheme for hydrogen and ammonia is well-developed in Australia. So, it is expected that we both will have active exchanges of opinions regarding evaluation criteria for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions, which are preconditions for projects.
JOGMEC and the WA State have cooperated in the field of metal and mineral resources since we signed the MOU for Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership" to strengthen relations in the field of metal and mineral resources in general on February 2020. This time, JOGMEC and the WA State have decided to extend their cooperation in the area of energy resources including hydrogen and ammonia, CCS, and CCUS, to realize a carbon-neutral society through a stable supply of natural resources and energy. It will strengthen the relationship between JOGMEC and the WA State better. This is the first MOU signed with Australia as the new JOGMEC in the field after the revised Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation Act came into force on November 2022.
JOGMEC will continue to contribute to Japan’s energy security and the realization of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Australia and other Asian Pacific countries, based on the climate change measures led by Japan, the United States, Australia, and India(QUAD).
