AlwaysFree: Kraton Seeking Regulatory Approval For Sulfonated Polymer With Self-Sterilizing Properties

Author: SSESSMENTS

Specialty polymers and high-value biobased products maker Kraton Corporation is seeking to secure regulatory approval for its BIAXAM sulfonated polymer technology with long-lasting self-sterilizing properties. Kraton said that Boston University had tested the BIAXAM technology at its BSL-4 laboratories and found that it can inactivate up to 99.99% of SARS-CoV-2 and other microbes.

Other renowned institutions, such as University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, North Carolina State University, and Syngene International Ltd. have also thoroughly studied the new technology at their respective facilities.

According to Kraton, BIAXAM is suitable to be applied as a coating on personal protective equipment (PPE), including face shields. It can also be used in high-contact surfaces such as public transportation surfaces, phone cases, door handles, and elevator buttons. Kraton’s Senior VP said BIAXAM is the first disinfectant which offered rapid and long-lasting performance.
