Toy manufacturer LEGO said that it would phase out single-use plastic in its packaging and convert to more sustainable materials following requests from consumers.
LEGO will invest USD400 million for sustainability measures over the upcoming three years. It has set a target to make all packaging sustainable by the end of 2025.
At the moment, the LEGO Group consumes roughly 5,000 tpa of plastic to box its products, at 10% of its total packaging. The LEGO pieces themselves require 90,000 tpa of plastic.
The company has yet to improve its plant-based bio-brick made of sugar cane, but it has advised its customers to reuse the old plastic pieces of toy to prevent the blocks from ending up in a landfill.
