The Malaysian government has not decided whether or not to postpone the Eid Al-Fitr holiday to the end of the year. According to Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, it is not time to make such a decision and Malaysian should rather focus on Ramadan first.
Ismail Sabri noted that the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) would discuss whether or not to postpone the festive break. Eid celebration, tarawih prayer, and all celebrations related to Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr will be deliberated by the Religious Affairs for a decision later, he added.
More than 60% of the Malaysian population is Muslim and they will observe the Islamic holy month from April 23 and will be celebrating Eid Al-Fitr on May 24. Previously, the government of neighbouring Indonesia decided to reschedule Eid Al-Fitr holiday to December 28-31 instead of May 26-29 to prevent an annual mass exodus that could spread the coronavirus further to rural areas.
