AlwaysFree: Petrochemical Producers Assess Damage After Hurricane Ida

Author: SSESSMENTS

Petrochemical producers in Louisiana have regained power supplies and continued damage assessments after sustaining Hurricane Ida, which made landfall on Sunday as a Category 4 storm. However, some plants remained idle as they were unable to secure feedstocks. Power provider Entergy said eight high-voltage transmission lines were damaged by the storm, which cut power in southeast Louisiana, where some petrochemical plants are located.

Shintech’s initial assessments showed no major damage at its Plaquemine and Addis complexes. The two sites regained access to power, but supplies of industrial gases remained halted. Power has also been restored at Formosa’s Baton Rouge complex, but it still waited for nitrogen flows from a third-party supplier, which still suffered power outages.

Shintech operates two polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plants in Plaquemine and Addis with a total capacity of 1.5 million tons/year. Shintech’s Plaquemine site also produces chlor-alkali, ethylene dichloride (EDC), and vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). Meanwhile, Formosa’s Baton Rouge plant can produce up to 513,000 tons/year of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
