AlwaysFree: Plant-Derived Bioengineering Plastic "DURABIO" Acquires Two Bio-Based Product Certifications In Europe

Author: SSESSMENTS

According to the company’s website news release on February 27, 2023, the plant-derived bioengineering plastic "DURABIO™" developed by the Mitsubishi Chemical Group (the MCG Group) acquired two bio-based product certifications in December 2022, one from DIN CERTCO, a German certification body, and the other from NEN, a Dutch certification body.

These certifications are based on certification and labeling schemes aimed at developing and expanding the market for bio-based products. Biomass content tests are conducted according to international standards, and products that meet the criteria are permitted to use certification labels. With the acquisition of these certifications, the value of DURABIO™ as an engineering plastic made from plant-derived raw materials will be widely recognized internationally, especially in Europe.

DURABIO™ is a bioengineering plastic made using the renewable plant-derived raw material "isosorbide." Its use can reduce the consumption of petroleum, which is an exhaustible resource, and can also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases since the plant that makes the raw material absorbs carbon dioxide during the growth process. In terms of impact resistance, weather resistance, transparency, optical properties, etc., it has better performance than conventional general engineering plastics. Its application is expanding into a wide range of fields such as interior and exterior parts for mobility, optical and electronic device components, and daily miscellaneous goods.

Through the development of DURABIO™, the MCG Group will continue to supply high value added performance products and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.
