AlwaysFree: PRE Updates Guidelines On Recycling Waste Characterization

Author: SSESSMENTS

Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), a group that focuses on chemical recycling and quality of recyclates has updated its guidelines on recycling waste characterization, known as bales characterization guidelines. The latest update renews existing guidelines and adds ones including guidelines on PE and PP films; HDPE containers; rigid PP; PS packaging; rigid and flexible PVC; WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) and ELV (end-of-life vehicles); as well as clear, clear-blue, light blue, and coloured PET waste.

The European Union requires consistent quality and characteristics of plastic waste going to recycling plants. The updated guidelines specify the main properties of sorted waste, including the type, origins, the means of transportation, levels of impurities, and supplier information. The instructions were developed by product type to improve the quality of recyclates and increase the efficiency of the recycling process.

On Tuesday, Chemical Recycling Europe (CRE) urged the industry to unlock the potential of chemical recycling by faster recognition and legislation review so it can play the role to achieve circular economy by converting polymeric waste into value-added materials.
