The manufacturing facility in Erie, Pennsylvania will be closed by BASF in 2021. Used primarily in the petrochemical industry, the facility produces process catalysts. Long-term profitable operations are no longer achievable in Erie, despite significant expenses to improve assets.
Longer-term business considerations and customer needs are the reasons behind BASF’s decision to cease the facility. By the end of 2020, most production operations will cease. The Pennsylvania petrochemical facility, through Q1 2021, will continue to fulfil confirmed customer requests. The last decommissioning and demolition work are expected through mid-2022.
Starting with the ceasing of operations in December, approximately 75 positions will be phased out. Including support for employment at other BASF facilities, BASF will provide severance and outplacement services to employees.
