AlwaysFree: Russia Struggled to Limit Gas Flaring

Author: SSESSMENTS

According to a draft government document, Russian oil producers struggled to limit gas flaring in 2020 and failed to reach a targeted level with a hefty margin.

The utilization of the associated petroleum gas (APG) in the country climbed to 82.6% last year from 81.5% in 2019, but still significantly below the 95% target, originally planned to be achieved in the mid-2010s.

The high level of gas flaring was caused by the insufficiency of infrastructure required to transport and utilize APG in Russia, along with several refining facilities incidents.

Surgutneftegaz had the highest percentage in limiting gas flaring as its APG utilization rose to 99.5% in 2020. Gazprom posted a 98.9% APG utilization rate while the country’s energy major Rosneft only saw a 73.1% rate.

In the whole year, Russia’s APG utilization climbed to 94.7 bcm from the previous year’s 94.1 bcm.
