AlwaysFree: Shell Plans Large Biofuel Plant In The Netherlands

Author: SSESSMENTS

Royal Dutch Shell announced on September 16 that it would build a large biofuel production plant at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The plant will be capable of producing biofuel, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel, at an 820,000 tons/year capacity, making it one of the biggest in Europe. According to Shell, the biofuel from the plant would prevent the release of 2,800,000 tons/year of carbon dioxide (CO2), equivalent to emissions from 1 million cars.

The project is part of Shell’s Powering Progress strategy, where it plans to scale back its 14 refining facilities into five energy and chemicals parks. Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, formerly known as the Pernis refinery, is the second park to be announced following the launch of a similar facility in Rheinland, Germany. The Anglo-Dutch company also aims to reduce the production of conventional fossil-based fuels by 55% by 2030 while increasing the output of biofuels and hydrogen for transportation.
