Shipowners have announced additional surcharges and rate hikes for Asia-to-Europe routes for December as container shortages continued to worsen, outpacing the slowdown in exports. France’s CMA CGM nominated a peak season surcharge of $600/FEU for shipments to all ports in the Mediterranean Sea from all Asian ports. The surcharge will be effective starting on November 15.
German Hapag Lloyd announced general rate increases (GRI) of $4,690-$5,190/FEU for shipments from east Asia, except Japan, to various destinations, that will come into effect on December 1. The sharp GRI for December represents various costs being applied for shippers to guarantee on-time loading and delivery of their export cargoes to Europe and North America amid an increasingly severe shortage of containers in Asia.
