Russian petrochemical producer SIBUR has just made a final investment decision (FID) on a project to convert recycled food packaging into green polyethylene terephthalate (PET) granules at its POLIEF site in Blagoveshchensk. The post-consumer food packaging will be recycled to make up to 34,000 tons/year of PET flake.
The flake is then converted into granules which will be similar to a blended or hybrid pellet containing a mix of virgin and recycled PET. According to POLIEF CEO Evgeny Semenko, the production of green PET granules would commence in around mid-2022. SIBUR said the green PET granules would comply with the highest standards and would be initially marketed in Russia. However, the company may also target the European market, where R-PET supply is currently constrained.
