South Korea’s LG Chem will start using bio-naphtha at its petrochemical complexes in Yeosu and Iksan in June. Finnish biofuels producer Neste will supply the bio-naphtha obtained as a by-product from its renewable diesel production. Neste uses post-consumer cooking oil and palm oil as feedstocks to produce renewable diesel. LG Chem also received ISCC-Plus certification for its Yeosu plant on April 20.
LG Chem will use bio-naphtha to produce polyvinyl chloride, high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polycarbonate, glycols, nitrile butadiene latex, synthetic resin acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, superabsorbent polymer, and bisphenol-A. According to the company, using bio-based feedstock to replace fossil-derived raw materials can lower carbon emissions by around 50%. In July 2020, LG Chem vowed to limit carbon emissions at 2019 levels and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
