Official customs data showed that Thailand’s LNG imports surged 37.3% year-on-year to a record high of 679,779 tons in October. It also represents strong growth of 20.3% from September. The surge is attributed to higher spot LNG purchases to offset a sharp drop in domestic gas output. Australia and Malaysia were Thailand’s largest LNG suppliers last month. For the first ten months of 2021, Thailand’s LNG imports totalled 5.36 million tons, up 9.8% from the same period in 2020.
It also imported 789.3 Mcmd of natural gas via pipelines from Myanmar in October, but that declined 0.8% from the previous month. Natural gas imports from Myanmar averaged 737.7 Mcmd in January-October, a decline of 0.1% from a year earlier. The power sector is the biggest consumer of gas in Thailand, accounting for 59.6% of the kingdom’s total consumption over January-September, followed by gas separation plants (20.6%) and the industrial sector (17.3%).
