The French Energy group, Total, said that It had resigned the role of operator in five Foz do Amazonas Basin exploration blocks. The Foz do Amazonas Basin is located 120 kilometers offshore Brazil. Geologists reported that the area may contain approximately 14 billion barrels of petroleum, more than the amount of Mexico’s proven reserves.
On the other hand, environmentalists have been trying to prevent the area from oil exploration as the location is home to a sizable reef and marine wildlife.
Total said in statement that the decisions open a six-month period to appoint new operators whom the operational activities will be handed over.
