AlwaysFree: Turkey’s Russia, Iran Natural Gas Imports Slumped

In the first half of 2020, Turkey’s imports of natural gas from Iran and Russia slumped and it received the commodities from new countries.

From Russia, Turkey imported 41.5% less of natural gas compared to the same period in 2019 to 4.7 bcm. Meanwhile from Iran, the country purchased 2.02 bcm of natural gas, down from the same period last year of by 46% with no gas imports in the second quarter.

Turkey’s total natural gas imports in the first six months of this year plunged by 3.5% to 22.5 bcm, Out of that amount, 12.1 bcm was transferred via pipeline while the rest was as liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The country’s highest long-term LNG contract was with Algeria at 2.99 bcm while the highest spot came from Qatar at 2.85 bcm, a 12.4% increase year-on-year. Turkey’s spot LNG imports from the US, meanwhile, soared by 144% yearly to 2.16 bcm.

Turkey had also secured new source countries to import gas from, such as Trinidad and Tobago, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Egypt, Norway, and Spain.

The consumption of natural gas in the January-June period went down by 3.8% year-on-year to 24.3 bcm.

The country exported 203 mcm of gas to Greece in the period.
