According to the Financial Times, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is about to accelerate the sale ban on new petrol and diesel cars to 2030, from the original plan of 2040 and the latest change in February 0f 2035.
FT cited unidentified industry and government figures in its report that Johnson would announce the acceleration in a speech on environmental policy next week. However, the Downing Street spokeswoman rejected the request to comment on the issue.
The rule would not affect some hybrid cars which use a mixture of electric and fossil fuel propulsion. They could still be sold until 2035.
The end to the sales of new petrol and diesel cars would hugely affect the country’s auto market as so far in 2020, those vehicles have made up about 73.6% of new car sales. The sales of pure electric vehicles only made up 5.5% as they are more expensive. The remaining sales were of hybrid vehicles.
