AlwaysFree: Worley Carries Out FEED For Avantium’s Flagship Plant

Author: SSESSMENTS

To develop Avantium’s flagship plant that will support the transition to a bio-based economy for plastics, Worley has been awarded a FEED (front-end engineering design) contract. The plant will produce 100 percent plant-based FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), a key building block for many chemicals and plastics.

Avantium Renewable Polymers, Avantium’s subsidiary, will locate their new plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. Novel technology will be used in the facility, converting plant sugars into a wide range of sustainable plastics and chemicals. To demonstrate the new YXY plant-to-plastics technology in a pilot plant, lab research has been completed by Avantium Renewable Polymers.

For the new plant, Worley is carrying out the FEED that will make PEF (polyethylene furanoate) and FDCA commercially available. In March, the concept development phase was completed and Avantium is ready to progress to commercial scale. To enable  Avantium to take a FID for construction of the flagship plant at the end of 2020, Worley aims to complete the FEED phase at the end of this year. The plant in 2023 is scheduled to start up.
