NewsSSESSMENTS: Dow Complex Remains Shut Due To Floodwaters

Author: SSESSMENTS

Some of the floodwaters from the Tittabawassee River that forced Dow to shut its headquarters and manufacturing facility in Midland, Michigan on Tuesday, have retreated. However, the complex remained closed as of Wednesday afternoon, market sources informed SSESSMENTS.COM. The National Weather Service (NWS) said the river would unlikely decrease to below flood stage until Sunday.

According to Dow’s social media posting, the floodwaters have commingled with chemicals at its containment ponds in the site. Dow did not disclose what kind of chemicals that may have spilt to the floodwaters. However, it ensured that the chemicals would not create any threat to residents or environmental damage.

Market sources informed SSESSMENTS.COM that Dow had activated an emergency plan inspecting all facilities and remediation assets along the river. Dow’s Central Michigan complex houses units that produce PVC, cellulose derivatives, ion-exchange resins, methyl chloride, monochloroacetic acid, and silicones.

As SSESSMENTS.COM noted, Trinseo, Cabot, and Corteva Agriscience also have production sites in Midland. Trinseo produces ABS and styrene-butadiene latex in the area, Cabot produces fumed silica, while Corteva produces diclosulam, chlorpyrifos, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetates, and some other agrichemicals.
