The All India Plastic Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA), in its letter to member companies obtained by SSESSMENTS.COM, said that the association along with other plastic industry groups had convinced the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers to keep the current import duties and oppose the proposal of additional tax on polymer imports.
Previously SSESSMENTS.COM reported that the Indian government was considering levying extra duty of 15% on some petrochemical imports that is planned to be valid from May 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021. This proposed tax, also known as COVID-19 duty, is intended to be applied on top of existing import taxes and include almost all chemicals and petrochemicals imported by India.
In the same circular letter (attached), AIPMA also said that based on its request, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) had recommended the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to ban import of finished plastic goods from China.
