- PP prices in Indonesia recorded on a downtrend in February and March
- PP resins demand in Indonesia remained subdued in the first quarter of 2020
- Import PP prices are expected to remain soft
In the first week of January, the leading Indonesian polyolefins producer adjusted its price list three times. The first and second price list announced on January 6 and 7 showed a stable offer for PP grades, while the third price list announced on January 8 recorded an increase of IDR280,000/ton ($17/ton) for all PP grades. While in the last week of January, the producer initiated a price increase of between IDR270,000-280,000/ton ($16.6-17/ton) on a weekly comparison. Following suit, most local traders adjusted up offers for local PP Homo Raffia and PP Homo Injection cargoes between IDR200,000-300,000/ton ($12-18/ton) compared to the same period. In contrast, local PP prices in Indonesia recorded on a downtrend in February and March, SSESSMENTS.COM noted. In the last week of February, the producer announced offers for PP Homo Film, PP Homo Injection and PP Homo Raffia with a reduction of IDR690,000/ton ($42/ton) on a weekly comparison.
While in March, due to the unsupportive demand, the producer decreased offers for PP Homopolymer grades between IDR140,000-150,000/ton ($8.6-9/ton) at the beginning of March. However, PP prices started moving up as Rupiah depreciated against the US Dollar at the end of March. PP Homopolymer offers from the leading Indonesian polyolefins producer increased by IDR620,000/ton ($38/ton) on a weekly comparison. For Copolymer grades, SSESSMENTS.COM noted that due to the inventory and sales pressure, stiff resistance from buyers, intense competition with import prices, and lower prices from competitors, the leading Indonesian polyolefins producer applied a hefty reduction on PP Random Copolymer offers as much as IDR3,000,000/ton ($185/ton) on the third week of the February.
In the import market, February shipment offers of Malaysia and South Korea origin surfaced with an increase of between $30-70/ton and $40/ton, respectively on the monthly comparison. While offers for Thai PP Block Copolymer captured lower by $20/ton compared to the same period. While offers for Chinese PP Homo Raffia cargoes to the country also reduced by $30/ton compared to the offer level before Lunar New Year holiday. Meanwhile in February, offers for Thai PP Homo Injection, PP Homo Raffia and PP Block Copolymer declined between $10-20/ton on a monthly comparison. In March, PP Homo Raffia offers of the Middle East origin were available at $800/ton on LC at sight, CIF Indonesia Main Port basis, decreased around $100/ton compared to the offers at the beginning of March. However, buy ideas expressed to SSESSMENTS.COM were at $700/ton-level.
PP resins demand in Indonesia remained bearish in the first quarter of 2020, despite the prices uptrend in January. Buyers preferred a wait-and-see stance on the back of softer crude oil prices and the depreciation of Rupiah. However, a slight improvement recorded for the woven bag demand in February as supported by the harvest season. Entering March, as the first case of Coronavirus was confirmed, buying sentiment in the country deteriorated. Interest towards import cargoes diminished as Rupiah weakened against the US Dollar, made import offers became less appealing. On the supply side, SSESSMENTS.COM’s data showed that PP supply in the domestic market was tight throughout January.
In the production sector, Indonesia’s Polytama Propindo told SSESSMENTS.COM that the company shut its PP plant with a capacity of 300,000 tons/year from March 29 following the maintenance shutdown at their feedstock supplier, Pertamina. The plant was scheduled to remain shut until April 25.
Looking ahead, Indonesian market players opined to SSESSMENTS.COM that PP demand in the country would remain bearish in the upcoming months. Likewise, import PP prices are expected to remain soft, while local PP prices most likely depend on the currency exchange rate.
