Borealis is conducting trial runs to process a feedstock derived solely from vegetable-based waste streams at its cracker in Stenungsund, Sweden. The test will be carried out throughout September and will determine how this renewably-sourced feedstock can replace fossil fuel-based feedstocks. During the test, Borealis will process around 1,000 tons of renewable feedstock.
The company will gauge any possible adverse effects on the cracker ovens from processing vegetable-based feedstock. It will also see whether processing renewably-sourced feedstock requires more frequent cleaning intervals and affects production timetables. Satisfactory results will allow Borealis to raise renewable-sources feedstock in its raw material mix. It will also enable the company to further develop its Bornewable portfolio of premium circular polyolefins.
